University of Surrey’s new £45m Vet School is truly one of a kind. The powerful, integrated Crestron audio visual solution sets the University apart from the rest, with a pioneering educational environment and all the technological resources to deliver a dynamic teaching experience to the Veterinary Medicine students.

In October 2015, the University opened the new School of Veterinary Medicine buildings, a remarkable facility designed by leading architecture firm, Devereux Architects, which Surrey integrator proAV was commissioned to equip with pioneering AV technologies to create a world class centre of educational excellence. Indeed, the University of Surrey’s Veterinary Biosciences degree is ranked number one in the UK by The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide.

Utilising Crestron’s DigitalMedia™ and CP3 processing technology as the backbone to this powerful and integrated audiovisual solution, proAV has created a future proof scheme for the Vet School’s three buildings (the Main Academic Veterinary School of Medicine, the Veterinary Clinical Skills Centre and the Veterinary Pathology Centre) which will accommodate advance in technology, support the University’s reputation as a centre of educational excellence and world-class teaching resource – as well as offering great return-on-investment (ROI) by enabling corporate and private hire of the new facilities.

Crestron technology delivers new capabilities to the laboratories in the campus in terms of visually-rich educational presentations. This extensive project covers 30 small group teaching rooms, Clinical Skills Laboratory, a Biochemical Lab, a simulated Veterinary Surgery, various meeting rooms and communal areas, as well as significant lecture theatres and teaching areas – all controlled by Crestron and fitted with the latest in AV functionality.

The Clinical Skills laboratory has both 3D and 2D displays which are used to present streamed content from connected devices, 3D cameras to stream content out to the network/IPTV distribution, flexible 2D cameras, microphones and controls. The Biochemical lab features interactive displays with cameras and mics to capture and stream content. In the lab for anatomy teaching, 3D displays are controlled by a central control panel interface to display streamed content and a portable camera and overhead 3D camera both feeding the IPTV encoder via video matrix for viewing in other rooms.

As well as the laboratories, the project encompasses the entire Vet School facility, including a mock surgery area including flyer and consultant room, 30 small group teaching pods, large meeting rooms with projection and video conferencing facilities, and the communal areas with digital signage tailored to each individual area and live streams from the labs.
